I am a reference librarian in Laramie, Wyoming and I love my job. It consists of answering reference questions for patrons and looking for references on certain topics. Although many people may think that a library is a quiet place to work that is not always true since you work with all types of people. My library is a small branch library, so it isn’t as hectic as other ones all the time so I have time to listen to music. I can go about my work listening to my IPOD during times when we don’t have a lot of other things to do.You might think that working at a library is boring, but really it depends on where you work. There is always something to do especially when you love books. I find that I have a lot of trivia knowledge about a lot of things and that helps me research when I need to find something. I also teach my colleagues how to find things they are looking for because they are not always able to approach the research in a way that makes sense. I have never thought that there would be any hazards in the library because it seems to be such an easy place to work, but the other day I had a situation happen that upset me greatly. I was listening to my IPOD when I was walking through the children’s room during story time. I sat to listen to the story for a minute because it was one of my favorites, and I sat my IPOD on the desk for a few minutes. Believe it or not one of the kids saw it and jumped up from the story time, came over, grabbed my IPOD and took off running; a frantic mom said, “Sorry!” and took off after her child. When the chase was over the mom brought back my IPOD but not before the front was completely shattered. She offered to pay for damages, but as a librarian I couldn’t take money from a patron. I told her I was sure that I could send it in for IPOD repair. Coincidentally, I had researched MINI IPOD parts a week ago for another patron. I sent my IPOD to an IPHONE repair and IPOD replacement parts store and received it back very quickly. Now I do not take it into the children’s room. That was one IPOD repair that won’t have to happen again.
