I grew up in Dublin, Maryland, with a very loving family. We were one of those “perfectly functional” types of households that got along all the time (or, at least, almost all the time). We loved spending time together and always had each others’ backs. Naturally, as you can imagine, my going away to college was a devastating change. I really didn’t know how I was going to manage. It was such a shock that, for my first semester of school, I almost failed all of my classes. I realized the next semester, however, that I really needed to get a grip on myself. It was the most amazing gift I’d ever gotten and it just seemed so perfect for my situation. My dad explained that he didn’t want me failing any more classes – that I had no excuse now. He said it in a very joking tone, of course, but I knew he meant it. And I knew I wanted to make it happen. I used the phone and calls to my family as a reward for good things I did during the day. For example, I refused to call anyone on the phone until my studying was done. And for the exams that I made excellent grades on, I rewarded myself with a whole day of phone calls. It was psychological, surely, but it worked. I was making awesome grades at school and, gradually, that ache for my family began to fade into a duller ache. It was still there, of course, but I could live with it. One day, however, to my utter dismay, I was walking to class and broke my phone. You see, between classes everyone is hustling and bustling all over the place. Everybody is in a rush to get somewhere and one guy smashed right into me, making me drop my phone. I was furious but he was gone the next instant, leaving me with a broken screen. Fortunately my friend told me about an IPOD batteries company he used when his IPOD not working that specialized in Apple IPHONE repair. I mailed my poor phone into them and got it back only a few days later – good as new! I’m much more careful with my phone now because I realize how much I have riding on it. Like I said, it’s all psychological (I suppose), but it works.
