Living here in Barstow, California, with three brothers, I’ve grown accustomed to repairing my things. It gets to be quite an inconvenience, that’s for sure, but I’ve managed to teach myself the basics about most electronics. I even offer to repair my brothers’ things, when they manage to break their own toys. I guess it’s the price of being the only responsible member of the family. I’ve repaired DVD players, computers, remotes, stereos, MP3 players, and so much more. My brothers had never really bothered with a thank-you before… but one day I was surprised to come home and find a gift-wrapped present sitting on the coffee table. When I asked the boys about the present, they told me it was mine and that I should open it. So… I did. Inside was a beautiful, amazing, brand new iPod with all of my music already put in it (I guess they had swiped my old music player at some point). I was so grateful. It really was the most thoughtful thing anyone had ever done for me. I brought that iPod with me everywhere. It became the most important electronic in my house – but it didn’t take long for the boys to break it. I had been in my room when one of them came in, telling me how I shouldn’t be mad because they’d given me “another opportunity to learn”. To translate, they’d broken something and expected me to fix it. I went out to see what it was and found the soccer ball lying haphazardly on the floor by the TV. Upon further examination, I noticed my precious iPod lifeless on the same coffee table I’d originally gotten it from. Except this time there was no wrapping… and there was a huge crack down the face of the screen. Oh, I was furious. I yelled at the boys and then stomped back into my room, going online and researching Apple iPod viewer replacements. When I came back out to study the iPod in person and apply what I’d learned, it was gone. Later that evening, my brothers returned home with another wrapped gift. They explained how sorry they were and told me to open “the surprise”. When I did, I found an iPod. It looked brand new but they quickly explained that it was my old one. Evidently, they’d found an iPhone repair company that could fix an iPod and even paid for the repairs themselves. I was so flattered! I try not to yell at them anymore when they break things. Instead, I’ve begun teaching them how to repair their own accidents. Or at least teaching them the value of a dollar and how expensive things can get when you’re constantly paying for repairs.
