Home Improvement Over The Weekend

Friday, October 30th, 2009

I have never thought of myself to be a handyman, but I am becoming a big fan of it. I was looking around my house, and I decided that there were some interesting renovations that needed to be done. I am a pretty handy type person, but I have never done home improvement. I decided that the best course of action would be to look up everything on my iPhone to see if it was feasible. I am also really obsessed with looking up things on Google to see how they are done.

This turned out to be perfect, and I spent hours wandering around Home Depot. This was the perfect Saturday afternoon for me, and I ended up getting some interesting flooring that I could stick directly to the ugly tile in my house for a completely new look. This took me several hours to achieve, and I’m not even done yet! I think that it is one of those things that is difficult to stop once you get started, and now I have an extremely long list of things to do regarding home improvement. The main benefit is that I get to be proud of my own handiwork and achievement.

iPod touch Remote App

Monday, October 19th, 2009

touchJust to set the scene, you may be sitting on your back porch having an evening cocktail while listening to music playing from your iPod dock inside your house. Even if you have iTunes playing on your computer, and you are listening to it from somewhere else in your house, you can now use Apple’s Remote App to control your whole musical selection through your iPod touch. This is seriously so convenient if you are relaxing with friends, or if you just don’t want to get up to change the song on your computer.

This is a remote that works with WiFi, so you can control your musical playlist anywhere that is within range. On your iPod touch, you can also see the artwork of the album, playlists, and your whole iTunes library. It will also allow you to control your speakers once you have downloaded the app, and the great news for you to know is that this app is free! It seriously can be a hassle if you are hanging out with friends and want to control the music on your playlists. Now you don’t have to bother at all because you can use this easy and free app to keep your music flowing all night long!

Mmm… Healthy Sandwiches!

Friday, October 16th, 2009

flatbreadI am a pretty low maintenance person, but that often leaves me eating unhealthy food at lunch, like fast food. I decided to look up this recipe app on my iPhone to see if I could find out anything healthy to eat for lunch that was really easy. I have to emphasize how important it is for me to make something easy because I am on the borderline lazy side. However, I also don’t want to eat fast food for lunch anymore and spend so much money on it.

I looked up some new healthy lunch recipes on this recipe app on my iPhone, and I found a really fun recipe that uses flatbread. Flatbread is actually quite healthy because it has very few calories. I found a recipe that used Mediterranean flavors, and it was definitely a delicious choice! If you are looking for a healthy and easy lunch option, then all you have to do is buy some healthy flatbread, and get some hummus, black olives, cheese, other vegetables, and whatever meat you would like. You can be pretty creative with this type of healthy lunch sandwich recipe, and believe me, it will taste so much better than fast food any day!

Red Wine To Stay Young

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

RedWine-798687I have always been a fan of red wine, but it wasn’t until recently that I read that it is able to make you stay young! A girlfriend of mine and I were talking about this when we went out to get a couple of drinks, and we didn’t know if red or white wine was better for you. I decided to Google this information on my iPhone while we were out to settle the debate, and it turns out that red wine wins.

You are recommended to drink a glass of red wine with a meal so that your body can absorb it slower for five days a week. This is supposed to reduce illnesses, like diabetes and a heart attack. The alcohol within the red wine does soothe inflamed arteries, but red wine also contains flavenoids, which are antioxidant ingredients that can protect the body. One of the biggest benefits to drinking red wine full of antioxidants is the fact that it can protect your cells underneath the surface and neutralize free radical damage. This is one of the biggest components to staying young because it will prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming. I’ll drink to that!

A Healthy Junk Food?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

porkA friend and I were having a lively debate about whether or not pork rinds were bad for you. We were shopping together in the grocery store to buy some snacks for a football game, when she desperately wanted to buy pork rinds. I knew that she was trying to stick to a healthy diet, but she claimed that they were a healthier snack. I decided that the only way to settle this fight was to look up the nutritional information on my iPhone.

I was thinking that pork rinds were bad because they were made from pig skin and deep fried. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a pretty gross combination. As it turns out, I had to eat my words (and the pork rinds) because she was right. If you do eat a one ounce serving of pork rinds, they have zero carbohydrates and 17 g of protein. That is a much better ratio than you would be able to find in any bag of chips, and 43% of the fat in pork rinds is unsaturated. They also contain some of the healthy fats that are found in olive oil. I was pretty surprised to find out that pork rinds are a “healthy” junk food!

Do You Like Starbucks?

Friday, October 9th, 2009

strawcremeWho doesn’t love Starbucks? It is an incredibly popular coffee chain in America, and I normally find myself stopping there on the way to work in the morning. I will text several of my coworkers on my iPhone, and they will text me back their coffee orders. This makes me pretty popular in the office because I always bring coffee for everyone.

Anyhow, I was noticing that a lot of the frozen coffee drinks on the menu at Starbucks seemed really fatty. I decided to look up the calorie information on my iPhone, and I almost wish that I hadn’t done that! I was going to order the Strawberries & Creme Frappuccino in a large size, and I found out that it had almost 600 calories! It also contains 30 teaspoons of sugar, which made my stomach turn a little bit. From that point on, I was scarred for life, so I decided that I would be much better off drinking the light frappuccino blends that they have available on the menu. I never thought that there was that much of a difference, but the light drinks are almost 500 calories less. Definitely something to think about if you are a Starbucks lover!

Use The WeBot App To Stream Your Pictures

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

ipod-touch-with-a-girls-face-on-the-frontIt’s so amazing how one simple iPod touch application can change your life, but that is how I feel about WeBot. This app is really helpful because it can stream your music and pictures directly to your iPod touch so that you can control your media no matter where you are at. I am really loving this app because I can stream my pictures from as many different computers as I want, and then I can access them all whenever I am on the go.

So far, this app works well for .jpg and .mp3 files, which is pretty much all that you could ask for. When you sign up for the app, you just have to download it and install it onto your computer so that you can select which files you want to share. This is a really fun app that both my sister and I have so that we can share pictures with each other, which is much easier than just posting them directly on Facebook. I also really like this app because I can stream a lot of media onto my iPod touch, which is one of the main reasons that I got this handy device.

Read It Later On The iPhone

Monday, October 5th, 2009

readOne iPhone application that I absolutely love is Read It Later. Let me start out by saying how much I love my iPhone and all of the applications that come with it because there really seems to be an application for everyone! Read It Later is really cool because it lets you store any website that you were on to mark it to be read later. For instance, if you were shopping for a bunch of different items, then you could mark specific websites to read later. You can also mark them for off-line reading, if you want to read from your home computer.

Users have said that this is a pretty tricky application to set up, but it is helpful to bookmark specific sites and articles. If you were looking at a certain article online and simply didn’t have the time to read it, then all you have to do is use Read It Later to do exactly that. This will allow you to mark and save a specific website so that you can go back to it at a later time. This is especially helpful if you had found an article that you wanted to read on your iPhone and wanted to save it to read later at home on your laptop.

Kids Love Miley Cyrus

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

miley-cyrus_2Has anyone noticed how many kids these days adore Miley Cyrus? My daughter is completely obsessed with her, and I am not sure that I see the attraction. She is getting more scandalous than ever, so it is difficult to know if she is a good role model for kids. However, her popularity doesn’t lie, and she is one of the biggest teen stars of all time.

Interestingly enough, her real name is Destiny Hope Cyrus, so I am not sure where the name Miley came from. I do know that my daughter has spent a serious amount of money downloading Miley Cyrus music from iTunes, and that is pretty much some of the only music that she has on her iPod. Miley, of course, is the daughter of the former big country star, Billy Ray Cyrus. I guess growing up among all of that fame prepared her for stardom because you can see her everywhere these days. As far as her music goes, I think that it is wonderful for kids to be able to listen to on their iPods, especially compared to many of the other artists that are out there. As far as the concert tickets go, I’m not sure that I’m willing to pay thousands of dollars for my daughter to see her!
